A couple of weeks ago, I showed you the lettuce starts I planted in an raised bed. The rats had been getting into the bed, digging holes, and disturbing the plants and their roots. I stuck plastic forks and knives in the ground around the lettuce starts to discourage the rats from digging.
Here’s what the bed looked like when I put up the fork fortress:
And here’s how it looks now:
The rats are still digging, but they haven’t knocked the forks over, and there are a few lettuce starts (mostly the ones toward the bottom of the photo) that seem to be doing okay and are growing. That’s encouraging. Our plan B was to lay chicken wire down on the soil, carefully tucking the lettuce into the holes in the chicken wire, but I think I’m going to stick with this and if we get three semi-decent heads of lettuce out of this bed, I’ll be happy.
