Foliage Friday: Nipplewort

This little weed is everywhere in our yard.

It’s pretty easy (and therefore very satisfying) to pull, so it doesn’t bother me too much, but I don’t have a name for it….

…until today: Nipplewort. What an unfortunate name. The botanical name is Lapsana communis.

It’s a member of the asteraceae family, as you might have guessed from the minature-dandelion-like flower. It likes to grow in part shade, which, as you might have gathered from yesterday’s post, is perfect for our yard. It is edible (according to Julia’s Edible Weeds), but I don’t have any interest in trying it.
